Local county commissioners and other officials have attempted to avoid having to publish notices in the newspaper. They have instead tried to use only the online government site and "subscriptions". In the online page, they attempt to scrub the information on even their most recent meetings so that the public cannot see or refer back to them, and in their "subscriptions", public notices of hearings/meetings are sometimes sent to "subscribers" only after the meeting is held. These are the tactics of secrecy used to corrode and suspend the normal democratic and free-market process on the local level. It is a means of knowingly causing mistrust and creating a low reputation / low expectations of local offices. This serves to condition people into accepting a totalitarian pattern of operation, due to lost hope of a better possibility.

The California Governor's Debate included a question on the subject of affordable housing, and the causes and answers to the high home costs. Interestingly, every answer addressed only the cost of new home construction.
Conspicuously absent was any answer addressing the costs of living for either homeowners or renters in their already-existing, often longstanding homes. The true concern that most people have is not with new home construction, but the costs of living in their present homes now. This is the true affordability problem. While the candidates readily discussed their ideas about building new homes or how to make them less expensive, not one thought or concern was raised regarding the process of rebuilding the thousands of already existing homes that were destroyed in the California fires last year.
