At the time of World War II, the United States had little more than half the population it has today. It had an estimated total of 133.4 million in July, 1941, it had a GDP of 1.68 Trillion, it had a total federal revenue of approximately 8.7 billion, and an overly high tax rate of 90% on the highest earners. The United Nations did not exist. Neither the CIA nor the Pentagon existed, and many of the towns, precincts and counties throughout the United State today that are presently occupied with hundreds of thousands of people were either relatively unknown, or did not exist at all. Yet when World War II knocked at America's doorstep on December 7th, 1941, it was able to answer and defeat its most formidable enemies, far more powerful than the enemies of the present.
Among Franklin Roosevelts expectations was the call to build 50,000 warplanes within the following twelve months. In 1941, more than 3 million cars were made in the USA. Only 139 more were made during the entire war. Instead, Chrysler made Fuselages; Ford made airplane engines, guns, trucks and tanks.
In the Willow Run plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan, there were 67 acres of assembly lines under a single roof, and it has been said that Ford Motor Company performed something of a miracle 24 hrs. a day; The average Ford passenger car had approximately 15,000 parts. The B24 Liberator long-range bomber had 1 million, 5 hundred thousand parts, and one came off the assembly line every 63 minutes.
200,000 planes were built, 2,000,000 trucks and 5,000 cargo ships. Defense industries put 6 million Americans to work in just 12 months, with thousands more being added every day. Enough equipment was made to furnish both the U.S military and the militaries of two other countries through the Lend-Lease program in defeating Nazi Germany, which declared war on the United States today, Dec. 11th. How was this possible? It was possible because the true strength of the United States has never been, and never will be in large population size, in diversity or in large federal agencies, but in industrial capability and a unified culture. This requires quality of people, not quantity.

A very interesting and important part of American history, and black culture in particular, is that of Ragtime music.
Like jazz, blues, rock and roll or swing, ragtime is completely unique and original to the United States.
It is rooted in classical music training, yet its particular style comes from the black shoe shiners of the early Twentieth Century, when one of the cultural standards in most public activity was to have polished or shined shoes. The many hours, days, months and years in this trade resulted in the men and "shoe-shine boys" deriving significant entertainment value from it, who developed it virtually into an art form. They developed many clever, time-saving and near rhythmical, show-like tactics with their rags, and with this came the featuring of "syncopated rhythm".
