Was Anti-Semitism the pivotal cause for the Great Depression?

The Smoot-Hawley Act of 1930 had very little relevance to the Great Depression, either to its beginning or its continuation.
The Depression had already begun prior to 1930, and was brought about in large part from betting, speculative short sales and trading 'on margin'. These can all be translated as foolish investment for easy money. Enough of this activity can lead to a crash, because the many parties and entities involved were not able to pay the bills and the creditors when they came due. This eventually led to a run on the banks, with the banks transversely suspending payments to depositors. The first banks to fail were rural banks, but the first larger bank to run into trouble was in New York City, and a member of the Federal Reserve System. It was the Bank of the United States. This bank had strong books, at least as strong as many that were propped up by other banks, and was an important symbol of New York City. Yet it was not included in the state club of established banks. The establishment instead considered it "marginal", and held the belief of Charles Darwin that in a moment of trouble, only the strongest deserved to survive. Because of this, it was abandoned by other banks. A leading banker described the attitude that motivated their decision to abandon it: "Let it fail, draw a ring around it, so that the infection will not spread." The differentiating feature of this bank was its large scale financing of Jewish merchants.
The refusal to support this bank resulted in the closure of many others, and rather than the "infection" being confined within a ring, it continued spreading.
This created a problem called "deflation", which is where the currency becomes too scarce. Rather than the Federal Reserve working to alleviate the problem by adding money into the economy, or better, allowing the Gold Standard to function, which would have added money automatically with the Gold inflows, they instead tightened the money supply. Further, the existence of the Federal Reserve System set up a basic schism within the economy between those banks which belonged to the system, and the many which did not. The banks not belonging to the system did not have much commercial paper, and were not considered especially worthy of rescue by the others, and because they were not a part of the Fed system, they were not the Fed's responsibility. So where other banks might have rescued them before, everyone now hesitated, and no one did. When these banks died, money died with it, worsening the deflation.

The Smoot-Hawley tariff was only added later on top of the true problems. It only added insult to injury because other countries raised their tariff rates in response, and made it more difficult for American industry to export to other countries.

A large portion of the unnecessary spending on education stems from the design and construction of the public school buildings. They have been designed to be very tall, to take up more sky space and give the appearance of greater importance. In addition to being intrusive on the general area, every extra foot of height beyond the normal 7 to 9 ft range begins to add exponentially to the costs. These costs include both construction, and the astronomical electrical and maintenance costs, which remain for the rest of the building's life.
Any added height beyond 9ft. ceiling height is of no value, because it adds no usable space or square footage. In addition, rather than contribute to a warm, personal and memorable learning environment, which includes the natural sunlight shining through the windows, these designs also omit windows in the classrooms. From one end to the other, they reflect the cold institutionalism and collectivism that is at the center of leftist, central planning ...

In the spirit of making America healthy again,
this is a simple, yet very healthy recipe that serves adequately as a full meal. Yet it is as tasty as desert:

  • Two large spoons of Greek style vanilla yogurt, mixed with Grape Nuts Flakes, and approx. one tablespoon of honey.
When there might be a long time before the next meal, extra protein and staying power can be had by adding 1/2 to 1 table spoon of Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter. The ingredients in this brand are very simple: Peanuts and salt. No artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. No list of ingredients a mile long. RFK would approve!
Because of this, this peanut butter is somewhat granular in texture and the oil rises to the top, so unlike the other brands, it needs to be stirred/mixed before every use.
This is hardly a sacrifice for using the one type of peanut butter that has no hydrogenated vegetable oil shortening. It is available at Publix and Winn Dixie.
